Hello, welcome to ENews 2008-10.
The objective of ENews is to advise, inform and update. And maybe even to amuse from time to time.
I have not got a cable in every conduit, so please feel free to email postmaster@cct.members-newsletter.co.uk with any newsworthy items you would like to be considered for inclusion.
All and any feedback is more than welcome.
It is now 9 weeks to the day since BW's withdrawal and I have not been advised of any positive news yet on the "Restoration post BW" situation. However I do know that there are lots of levers being pulled and you can rest assured that as soon as there's any indication of a signal going green you will be amongst the first to know.

12th April: Roadshow at Cirencester Farmers Market for the first time ever. Again there's a Roster waiting to be populated; if you are one of the 4/500 or so members living in the Cirencester area then why not lend a hand? 16th April: Eastern Branch monthly meeting at the Trout Inn, Lechlade. On the north bank of the Thames by the A417 bridge. 7:30pm start, everybody welcome
21st April: Lechlade History Society meeting 19:15 for 19:30 at the Lechlade Memorial Hall. Speaker Theo Stening has chosen a title of "The Re-Birth of the Cotswold Canals". All welcome. There is a charge of £3.00 per person per meeting for guests.

KNIT ONE PURL ONE - WATT A BRIGHT IDEA
My creativity correspondent Anna Watts has prepared the following piece addressed to the better halves.
"Ladies of the CCT
I was wondering if we could get together in the winter, maybe a couple of evenings a month, to inspire each other to produce some items for sale. I have a little knowledge about machine patchwork that I would be happy to pass on - but if we have amongst us a real patchworker, please own up!
Maybe the hand-sewers amongst us could come up with suggestions of things we could do. How about knitting and crochet?

EDITOR'S NOTE: in these days of Sex Equality, Human Rights, Health & Safety or whatever I must add that the suggested workshops will of course be open to all genders, creeds and ages............ let's hope Anna does not get a patchy response to her idea.

ARCHIE O'LOGGIE AT BRIMSCOMBE
The Archaeology Department of Cirencester College is looking to run a course over the weekend of the 24th/25th May under the glorious title of "Recording Archaeology using Standard Conventions and Techniques"
The venue is Brimscombe Port and each day will run from 10:00am to 3:30pm with a 45 minute break for lunch. All surveying & recording equipment will be supplied by the College
The programme for Day 1 includes an introduction to archaeology, familiarisation with equipment and basic landscape surveying; Day 2 will cover the recording of plans and elevations
Students will get a project workbook which will be full of helpful hints and tips for use in the field; in addition each will receive a certificate confirming their attendance on the course.
There are 8 places available at a special discounted bargain price of £50 per person. The Brimscombe Port Walls Fund has subsidised the cost of the course but if all 8 are not taken then the cost will rise as the overall cost of putting on the course will remain the same.....

He is looking for someone who would be interested in delving into the Thames & Severn Canal records at the Gloucestershire Records Office in Alvin Street, Gloucester with a view to writing a report on the history of Brimscombe Port Walls. RAC.........ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE?
No, Richard Attwood's Canamble, although it would be available if required!
This year's walk is on Sunday 27th April, starting from the Stroud District Council visitors car park at Ebley Mill.
There will be a short 4.5 mile walk and a longer 12 mile walk. The long walk will cover the entire towpath from the Ocean, Stonehouse to beyond Brimscombe Port and return using lanes and field paths.
To take part you will need a sponsorship form, available at (time expired link removed) and ideally you will be able to raise a minimum £5 in sponsorship.
Would you prefer to provide some armchair support? If so, why not sponsor the "Last Canambler" team? They have the important job of walking the route behind the walkers to make sure that nobody gets lost, or has fallen by the wayside. If you are unable to help in any other way - perhaps this is for you!

INFORMATION PAST & PRESENT
For the past 18 months or so work has been taking place on the prototype of a scheme aimed at providing easily accessible information about the canal, its environs and its history.
The stretch chosen for the first phase of this project is from Ryeford in the west to Lodgemore Mill, a couple of miles to the east.
In addition to 4 site panels along the route - at Ryeford, Oil Mills, Ebley Mill and Cainscross - there will be an audio-visual DVD and a towpath users leaflet widely available. Whilst the leaflet should be free the DVD will be subject to a minimum donation to the CCT, anticipated to be in the region of £3 (plus postage if appropriate). The DVD will form part of an education pack that will be made available to schools.
Subject to funding the next phase will cover the 1 mile stretch between Lodgemore Mill and Bowbridge.
Watch this space for further news, especially regarding availability.
Full details will appear on the CCT website at http://www.cotswoldcanals.com in due course; hopefully the DVD and leaflets will be around sometime in June.
