7th November 2008 Good afternoon and welcome to ENews 2008-28. The objective of ENews is to advise, inform and update. And maybe even to amuse now and then. Any and all feedback is more than welcome. oOo ODD ODE This issue of ENews - is coming to you oOo PAIN-FREE SWELLING - GIFT A MEMBERS HIP Now here's a good idea. If you are thinking of that unusual present for a loved one - or unloved one, come to that - how about a subscription to the Cotswold Canals Trust? Despite the current "Little Local Difficulties" that we seem to be experiencing with the restoration we still seek new members wherever and whenever we can. They are invaluable to us from a financial perspective as well as helping to swell our membership numbers. The more we have then the more clout we have when we get involved in the wheeler-dealer side of things. There's a fantastic range of subs on offer, starting with a single at just £10 per annum to an adult life coming in at £200. There's a bargain available here as this reduces to £125 for the Senior Citizens amongst us. And don't forget that as you're giving a gift we'll do what we can to help - you could call it Gift Aid I suppose. All you have to do is email Karen Grainger in "The Office", mail@cotswoldcanals.com and she will post some applications out to you emblazoned with your name which means you will receive the appropriate credit once the membership formalities have been completed for all those you 'sign up'. Whilst you are at it - why not ask Karen for some extra ones? Then you could keep some in your handbag or glove compartment just in case the opportunity arises to discuss any aspect of the Cotswold Canals Trust with your chums and colleagues - or even total strangers when you are out for a walk along the towpath, maybe. IT'S RAIN, DEAR A reminder that Rudolph and his Red Nose will be sleighing Santa in to Saul on the 7th, 13th, 14th, 20th & 21st December so that he can meet all the boys and girls - and the grown-ups, of course - aboard trip boat 'Perseverance'. The 20-minute cruises start at 10:00 and finish about 15:30 ish by when poor old Santa is ready for a break. Full details can be found on the Trust's website, http://www.cotswoldcanals.com oOo UNTIE THE MYSTERIES OF A SHEEPSHANK For those of you who are not familiar with the layout at Saul Junction, Ben lives aboard his boat 'Lyra' which is moored alongside his trading vessel 'Knot Krazy' in the Basin. To help launch his book (for which Clive Field, Trading Company Chairman, has written the foreword) Ben will be holding a book signing session in the Heritage Centre on Sunday 16th November between 12:00 and 16:00. Ben will be accompanied by his partner Trish; if you see a notice saying "Ask her!" it means that he is having to rest his voice after an operation a few days ago. Silent demonstrations of specific knots are a distinct possibility as well. "Knots for the Cut" retails at £12.50 of which a percentage is being donated to the Trust. If you come along then as an added bonus you will be able to get your Editor to make you a cup of tea - Julia & I are on Heritage Centre duty that day! oOo SLASHERS SURREPTITIOUSLY SWIPED I have received notification of an unconditional amnesty in respect of some missing mattocks. It reads: "A couple of years ago CCT bought six brand new mattocks to be kept in the Western depot at Eastington........and they have all vanished already. If you have one or all of them in your greenhouse or under the bed then please return them to the Western depot or email me richard@raash31.co.uk If you have a good reason to be the adoptive parent of one or more of the mattocks then you will be allowed to continue to give it/them a good home....but please let me know where you are" oOo Le D-DAY est ARRIVEE! At the full Council Meeting on the 6th November the Chair of Stroud District Council made the following announcement: "I am minded to call an Extraordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 16th December at 7:00pm to enable the Council to make a decision on the Canal Regeneration Project. I shall arrange for the Summons to be issued in due course" So there you have it. Here's hoping for the best Christmas present possible......... oOo FORTHCOMING ATTRACTIONS For further information about items marked* and for contact details please go to http://www.cct.teamconnect.org.uk and the Message Boards on the Activities page MONDAYS & WEDNESDAYS 8th NOVEMBER 9th NOVEMBER 10th NOVEMBER 11th NOVEMBER 16th NOVEMBER 19th NOVEMBER 29th NOVEMBER 30th NOVEMBER 1ST DECEMBER oOo If you have any newsworthy items you would like to be considered for inclusion please let me know at postmaster@cctmembers-newsletter.co.uk but please remember - there should always be a connection, however tenuous, with the Stroudwater, the Thames & Severn or the CCT! Bye for now. David Pagett |
