oOo FLASH BANG WALLOP The Volunteers' website at http://www.cct.teamconnect.org.uk has a new Photo Gallery page that is accessible to all site visitors. [Whilst you are visiting the site, though, you really ought to register your volunteering interests if you have not done so already.] There is a really eclectic mix of photos on display at present and as you will see there is a photo of an early Thames & Severn Canal token together with, a little further down, a photo of a London taxi. These are courtesy of CCT Member Bill McKivor - http://www.thecoppercorner.com - all the way from Seattle, USA. Bill is a keen numismatist with a special interest in fine English & American coins & tokens, in particular Conder Tokens. [I didn't either, but a quick Google search soon enlightened me.] He tells me I must also mention fellow CCT member David Jones of Reading who got him interested in canals in the first place. I feel a fascinating article for the Trow about T&S tokens coming on here.....all I need is someone to write it! oOo RESTORATION RAMBLES A series of 2 to 3 hour walks are scheduled over the coming months. The next one is scheduled for 9th August, start 2.30pm and the theme is "Ecology and environment - conservation led regeneration". It will start at Ryeford Bridge, Ryeford Rd North and head east to the Lawns Pond at Dudbridge. Access should be OK for most but there is a steep slope/steps under the Dudbridge Road bridge. If in doubt discuss with James when you book. A fortnight later on Thursday 23rd August, starting 6.00pm. there's another one with "Work in progress - the engineering & design of canal restoration" as its theme. Same route, same considerations, same booking arrangements. There are others scheduled and more will be added as the restoration progresses. Updates will be found on the Partnership website at http://www.cotswoldcanalsproject.org - follow the "Events" tab - and I shall do my best to keep you posted in these columns too. oOo MARKET IN YOUR DIARY The Roadshow will be at Stroud Farmers' Market again on Saturday 11th August. Our last visit there was really successful, please visit the Volunteers' website at http://www.cct.teamconnect.org.uk if you can help or contact Mike Slade the Roadshow Manager at mrmike.slade@googlemail.com for further details. oOo AUTHOR - ISED WALKS Richard Attwood will lead a series of guided circular walks based on his best-selling books "Around the Cotswold Canals" Volumes I & II. He is starting in September with volume 1. The walks will take place on the last Sunday of the month, so the dates are:- 30 September The Eastington Flight - meet at Pike Lock car park. All the walks are about 5 miles and will start at 11:00. As they are taking place in the autumn and winter the routes may be wet and muddy and the weather could be sunny/cloudy/bright/foggy/raining/freezing/windy/snowing - delete as appropriate -so please wear appropriate clothing and footwear! oOo THE TIME & THE PLACE Monday 6th August 7.30pm. Fromebridge Mill, Whitminster. oOo Please send any information or suggested topics for inclusion in the next issue of this newsletter to me at postmaster@cctmembers-newsletter.co.uk Regards |
